Do I have to travel to Panama for residence visa processing?

If I'm the sole caregiver for an elderly parent and can't travel much, are there exceptions to the Panama residency visa requirement for two trips for permit processing? Is this still a requirement?

You do need to travel to Panama to obtain your temporary ID for the visa. The only exception is the Qualified Investor Visa, also known as the fast-track visa, which requires an investment of at least US$300,000 in real estate and you need to come to Panama only once to obtain your permanent residency card.

Filing for residency in Panama will require visiting in person, with very few exceptions, like the Qualified Investor Visa, with which a full remote application and residency issuance can be done remotely.
