How can I move my American family to Portugal by investing in scientific research?

I am interested in getting the Golden Visa for my family and since I am a scientist, I would like to know more about the 350,000-euro transfer to fund scientific research that would allow me to get permanent residency. Can I decide what kind of research I invest in? How long does the process take? Will I be able to bring my wife and two children with me?

One of the ways in which you can obtain a Golden Visa is by investing in scientific research. In this sense, a capital transfer equal to or over 350,000€ applied in scientific research activities (the investment amount can be reduced to 280,000€ in low-density territories) gives access to obtaining the Golden Visa. One of the great advantages of the Golden Visa is the possibility of obtaining family reunion for the entire family of the holder of legal residence in Portugal.

From 01-01-2022, this option requires an investment of 500K euros, which must be applied in research activities carried out by public or private scientific research institutions, integrated in the national scientific and technological system; for application purposes, a declaration issued by a public or private scientific research institution integrated in the national scientific and technological system is needed, attesting to the effective transfer of that capital.

You can bring your family to Portugal through family reunification under the Golden Visa (and through any of the investment modalities allowed). Please note that the minimum investment amount for research activities has been increased from €350k to €500k as of January 1, 2022, but you can get a 20% discount on the minimum required amount (from €500k to €400k) if the beneficiary institution(s) is (are) located in certain low-density territories (determined by law). The choice of the entity benefiting from the investment is extended, but not totally free, since it only covers private and public scientific research institutions included in the national scientific and technological system. These entities are typified in the law.

Indeed, the Portuguese Golden Visa program foresees, as an investment option, the capital transfer of an amount equal to or above € 350.000,00 for investing in research activities, as long as they are conducted by either public or private scientific research institutions involved in the national scientific or technologic system, eligible for the application for a temporary residence in Portugal. The decision on which research activity to invest in is solely yours, provided it meets the above mentioned criteria. Also, as a residence applicant / residence permit holder, you’ll always be guaranteed by law the right to ask for family regrouping (in this case, for your wife and your children).
