How long does it take now to fully process Portugal’s Golden Visa?

Will the recent parliament voting make it shorter?

At this point, the Portuguese authorities are still recovering from the two-year backlog caused by the worldwide pandemic situation that we’ve all experienced. That, the current situation in Ukraine – which made the authorities turn all efforts and prioritize the asylum and refugee applications – as well as the Portuguese government’s decision to extinguish and replace SEF as the current authority for all migration matters, created a huge delay in the processing time for all residence applications. As such, at this point, the total processing time of a Golden Visa is of almost two years, considering both mandatory stages of the procedure (online and in-person applications – this last one occurring when the applicant provides his / her biometric data at a SEF facility), but it is reducing every day.

That will depend on several factors, so it is not possible to give you a concrete answer without knowing some additional information from your side.

On December 09, 2022 Patricia Valadas Coriel answered:

Golden Visa applications are now taking one year to be approved due to all the delays caused by Covid. Nevertheless, the backlog of applications pre-approved during Covid is now being taken care of. So, soon, the timelines will be reduced.

On December 12, 2022 Barbara Pestana answered:

Currently, the processes are taking between one and a half to two years, but this is not the standard time frame for applications, in normal terms. Public services around the world have been affected by a 2-year backlog, and Portugal was no exception. However, the immigration services are doing everything possible to catch up on the delays and, hopefully, during the next year, the processing time will be shortened. The recent vote in parliament is not related to this backlog.

On December 09, 2022 Sara Sousa Rebolo answered:

Currently the process is taking around 18 months. The recent voting in the parliament did not regard to this topic in particular but it is expected that the restructuring of the Immigration Office in 2023 will reduce the timings.
