What changes are expected in the golden visa program following elections in Portugal?

Will the new government come up with more favorable terms for investors who want to migrate to Portugal? Or are the investment immigration programs going to stay the same, more or less?

The government program is still under discussion but immigration and the restructuring of the Immigration Office is a priority. The last changes to the program were very recently introduced so we do not expect major amendments in the short term regarding the investment options available, although as the regulation is still to come out, it is possible that new interpretations of the law can be clarified.

We don’t note any changes for now, but the parties that motivated those changes are out of the government now, and with no capacity to influence. There are still excellent opportunities in the golden visa program in Portugal.

The Socialist party, the winner of the elections, is a center-left party, which understands the importance of foreign investment in the development of the country's economy. Having won the elections with an absolute majority, it doesn't need the parties further to the left to govern, thus it would neither feel the pressure from these parties (which were the ones that wanted to end the golden visa regime), nor it would need them to pass its proposals. I don't foresee a change that restricts the program in the next four years. I think that in the worst case scenario, the regime will remain in place, as it is, with the restrictions already imposed by the regime currently in force.

We do not know yet, but majority at least permits more stability in the program.

We don't expect any changes in the golden visa program anytime soon. The investment immigration programs are going to stay the same in the foreseeable future.
