  To be eligible for the Global Talent 858 visa, a candidate must be highly skilled in one of the 10 target sectors, and must also be able to attract a salary that meets the high-income threshold, which is currently set at 153,600 Australian dollars. They must have a recognized organisation or individual in Australia nominate them as global talent, in the same field as the applicant. The target sectors are resources; agri-food and AgTech; energy; health industries; defense, advanced manufacturing and space; circular economy; DigiTech; infrastructure and tourism; financial services and FinTech; education. Places are also available to PhD graduates, and certain PhD students who are nearing completion of their thesis and can demonstrate their exceptional talent and international recognition in a target sector.

  The key requirement in the Global Talent Independent (GTI) Program is that the candidate must prove they are internationally recognized with evidence of outstanding achievements; they must be highly skilled in one of the 10 target sectors, and have the ability to attract a salary at or above the Fair Work high income threshold of 153,600 Australian dollars. Alternatively, you can apply for the Global Talent Employer Sponsored (GTES) program, which requires 3 years work experience in a highly-skilled role, be sponsored by the employer and have earnings equivalent to the Fair Work High Income Threshold, not less than 80,000 Australian dollars, depending on the employer’s profile.

  The Global Talent Independent (GTI) visa requires that you are able to demonstrate an internationally recognized record of exceptional and outstanding achievement in a specific sector. You must have a level of prominence in this sector, and be assessed as likely to be an asset to the Australian community with no difficulty in finding employment (or becoming established independent) in this sector in Australia. Although there was a previous specific sector for "Data Science and ICT", this has been replaced with a much broader sector title of "DigiTech". You still have the potential to be considered under the DigiTech sector. Your application cannot be made upon a qualification alone unless it is a PhD (previously a bachelor's with honors and master's degrees were considered but this has changed since January 2021). You will need to demonstrate a record of achievement through your profession. Your achievement/s must be extraordinary (above the level of the average person if your field) and you would normally be expected to be a leader in your field, although this is not a requirement. You should be able to identify at least one significant achievement and be able to describe the outcomes of the achievement; for example, developed or implemented a solution that had a significant impact on the industry and is used by multiple companies. If your work experience is doing the normal day-to-day responsibilities of your profession without any notable achievement then you are unlikely to be eligible for this pathway. The first step is to prepare a portfolio with evidence of your achievements, qualifications and other relevant documents which is submitted as an expression of interest. The global talent team will then review this to decide whether to invite you to proceed further. Processing time for the expression of interest is likely to be around 6 months unless you're in a prioritised sector (ie. related to covid-19 response or economic recovery).
