To obtain a highly qualified activity visa, commonly known as D3, besides all the requirements common to all other types of visas, the following is necessary: (i) work contract, promise of work contract or provision of services with a company based in Portugal, with a minimum remuneration of 1400€ gross/month, and a minimum duration of 12 months; (ii) in the case of a regulated profession, hold high professional qualifications, duly proven; (iii) in the case of a non-regulated profession, hold high professional qualifications appropriate to the activity or sector. The area in which you will carry out the highly qualified activity is indifferent, as long as you perform an activity whose exercise requires specialized technical skills, of an exceptional character or an adequate qualification for the respective exercise. On average, this visa takes around 30 days to be issued by the consulate and then you have to wait for the appointment with SEF, already in Portugal, which can take between 2-4 months.

In order to apply for a residence permit for highly qualified activity, one must present an employment contract of at least one year’s duration, corresponding to an annual remuneration of at least 1,5 times the national average gross annual salary (1,752.52 euros/month) or three times the index value of social support – IAS (1.316,43 euros/month). For employment purposes in professions belonging to the major groups 1 and 2 of the International Standard Classification (CITP), which are designated as particularly deprived occupations, the salary threshold set out above must be at least 1,2 times the national average gross annual salary (1,402.02 euros/month), or twice the value of the IAS (877,62 euros/month). Legally, SEF has 90 business days in order to analyze your application, once the appointment for biometric data collection is executed.
