What is the difference between the D2 visa and Golden Visa in Portugal?

Our British family of four are considering moving south to Portugal. What is the best option if we want to work and live in Portugal with our two children? We have money to invest.

D2 and Golden Visa are different programs. If all family wishes to relocate to Portugal, D2 will be the most adequate and cheap option. Main differences regard to values of investment, minimum staying period in Portuguese territory, cost of the emoluments, timings and procedures of application, as well as reunification of adult children.

The big difference between a D2 Visa and a Golden Visa is that the first is for people who want to exercise an independent activity in Portugal or entrepreneurs and the second is for those who want to invest in Portugal. To obtain a Golden Visa the options are to buy property, create employment or transfer capital. To obtain a D2 visa, it is necessary to prove that you are self-employed or that you intend to open a business here. Besides, there is another big difference that has to do with the periods of minimum stay in Portugal, as the Golden Visa allows its holder not to have to change his residence to Portugal, while the D2 requires that. Note that both options allow for family reunion, which means that in either case you can bring your family with you.

The D2 requires the establishment of a business in Portugal and a minimum residence in Portugal of 6 months. The golden visa (ARI) requires an investment in real estate, a fund, a company, an R&D, cultural investment, or bank deposit. It gives, also, a temporary residence permit and permanent or citizenship after 5 years, but it requires only 7 days per year of stay in Portugal.
