Do I ever have to travel to Bulgaria for my citizenship application?

My family wants to apply for Bulgaria citizenship through investment. Does every one of the family have to travel to Bulgaria, or only the principal applicant is required to travel? Can beneficiaries fulfill this requirement on behalf of the family?

You will definitely need to travel to Bulgaria. Please note that obtaining EU (Bulgarian) citizenship is a serious and life-changing undertaking. You will not only have to establish certain links with the country, but to also fulfill different administrative formalities. The number of your travels to Bulgaria may be brought to a minimum, but the very idea of obtaining European citizenship without travel to the country undermines the core values of the EU. Your children can obtain their citizenship, based on your Bulgarian citizenship. In this case, it is possible, provided certain conditions are met, for them to obtain their status without travel to Bulgaria.
