How can backpackers visit Australia and get a work visa while sightseeing?

Would backpackers have to apply for work permits following recent announcement by Australia's prime minister? For how long would they be allowed to stay?

Working Holiday visa holders have work rights and can work for any employer for up to six months at a time. Due to current COVID-19 concessions, this has been extended to more than six months and will be reviewed in December 2022. If they meet the requirements, they can apply for a second or third Working Holiday visa, each valid for another 12 months. As employers are often impressed with these workers, they are frequently offered sponsored work visas as they wish to retain them working in their businesses for a longer period of time.

The Backpackers Visa is officially known as the Australian Working Holiday visa (subclass 417); backpackers can apply from an eligible country, who are aged between 18 and 30 years. Applicants can work for up to six months for the same employer and holiday in Australia, and stay up to 12 months. Note that citizens of Canada, France and Ireland are eligible to apply for the visa in the following age range: 18-35 years. Once your visa is approved, you can travel to Australia in 2022 without needing a COVID-19 travel exemption. It is possible to apply for a second Working holiday visa, provided that you undertake a 'specified work' for four months or more on your first Working Holiday visa. If you plan to work for longer than six months for an employer and you have a job sponsorship, then you can consider another visa category such as the TSS, 482 Temporary Skilled Work visa.
