How can I become a Cypriot citizen if I have a valid work permit in Cyprus?

I got a job offer from a company in Nicosia and received a one-year work permit. My employer said that the work permit gives me the legal status to stay in Cyprus, and it can be renewed. How many times can I renew it? What are my options if I want to apply for Cypriot citizenship in the future? What are the requirements?

A work permit does not give you the right for citizenship. Citizenship can be received through the investment program.

If you remain in Cyprus for seven consecutive years legally (residence permit, work permit, etc.), you can then apply for the citizenship-via-naturalization scheme. Approval of the application is at the discretion of the authorities, though. You will need to prove ties with the country, place of residence and that you have been residing legally during all years. A clean criminal record is always required, although not a requirement. The official cost is 500 euros with the application and 500 euros if you are approved. You can supposedly renew it indefinitely, but this is always in the discretion of the authorities and changes from time to time.

As long as the work permit requirements are obliged by yourself and your employer, it can be renewed. As a work permit holder (and hence a residency holder), you may apply to get Cyprus naturalization upon completion of seven years of residency, subject to conditions.

In order for you to be eligible to apply for Cyprus citizenship by years of staying, you need to have completed seven years of legal stay in Cyprus.

The official employment in Cyprus is four years. After the period of four years it can be renewed for one more year. However, this renewal depends to the nature of the work employment. If the employee has resided legally and continuously in the republic for five years with valid resident permits, then the resident employee has the option to apply to get a long-term residency. After the issuing of long-term residency it is difficult to be denied further resident permits or be deported. The application of citizenship is submitted by foreign nationals who have completed at least seven years of legal residency in the republic. In any case, the applicant must have resided legally and continuously in Cyprus during the 12 months preceding the date of the citizenship application. It must be noted that the granting of citizenship is a discretion of the Council of Ministers and therefore the application may be denied even if the requirements are fulfilled.
