What is the procedure of applying for a visa for self-employment in Germany?

I will graduate from the Humboldt University of Berlin this summer. I would like to start my own business in Germany and apply for permanent residency in the future. I did some research and learned that the first step is to apply for a visa for self-employment. However, I am not sure how I should start the process. I have a student visa, which will expire soon after my graduation. Should I start by applying to another kind of visa and then establish the business, or do I have to leave the country first then prepare for the application of the self-employment visa?

In general, it is possible to change from a student residence permit into a residence permit for self-employment without leaving the country. However, the application procedure is not less complicated than the general process as you have to deliver a range of documents and information that proves the economic benefits and prospects of the success of your business. The requirements you have to fulfill are set down in § 21 AufenthG. Therefore, it is important that you start preparing your application as soon as possible so a smooth change of your residence permit is possible. First and foremost, the preparation should include drafting a valid business and finance plan. If you have drafted and collected the other necessary documents, you can apply for a change to the new residence permit.
