What kind of background check is conducted for Greek Golden Visa applicants?

I am curious as to the steps taken about resident permit holders before their entry into Greece. What kind of standards are there for Greek Golden Visa holders? What in a person’s background would cause their application to be denied?

Greek Golden Visa is the lowest investment program in Europe. It requires the acquisition of one property or a sum of properties adding up to a 250,000 euros ( excluding legal fees). The buyer must demonstrate clear criminal record and medical insurance. It is not required to stay in the country to get the visa or renew it.

Background does not influence. The only importance is to send money by your own bank account.

Background is not checked in the frame of the procedure of Golden Visa. You should first be able to get a regular visa (tourist Schengen) in order to be able to get in Greece the first time. If this is not doable, the alternative would be to have a power of attorney signed in your country which would allow a lawyer or person you trust to proceed at least to the first formalities (purchase of property ). But this, in practice, is quite difficult since some of the steps aren’t possibly made without the presence of the investor (open a bank account/choice of the property).

Please be aware that a criminal record is required, so if there are serious criminal convictions against the petitioner, most likely his petition will be declined. There are no other special provisions except for when the petitioned has entered the country so as to start proceedings for the Golden Visa petition to have entered legally, i.e., Schengen visa stamp on his passport.

An entry visa, that is, legal entry in the country, is necessary to obtain a resident permit for owners of real estate property. Following the issuance of a residence permit, and for its duration, there is no need for a visa. Pursuant to Law 4251/2014, any third-country citizen who has entered the country legally holding a visa of any type has the right to apply for a residence permit. So step one of the process for the issuing of a resident permit for real estate property owners is to issue an entry visa for Greek territory. The interested party must submit an application for an entry visa type C to the Greek consulate authority in their country of origin, with all the necessary requested documents by the Greek consulate. Among the asking documents could be, depending on each embassy, clear criminal records, medical insurance, bank account statements, etc.

One of the basic requirements set out by the law, with regards the acquisition of the Greek Golden Visa, is the investor’s legal entry into Greece using an entry visa issued by the Greek consulate of their country. Accordingly, each Greek consulate is responsible to examine the person’s background and decide whether to issue such an entry visa or not. To this effect, the investor’s criminal record and their financial status will be surely taken into account.
