What are the educational requirements for Portuguese Golden Visa holders’ children?

I plan to move to Portugal on a Golden Visa. Do I have to register my kids for school since I will not be a permanent resident or citizen right away? Can I continue to homeschool them using a U.S.-based online program? What requirements will they be subject to once they start living in Portuguese territory?

Currently, compulsory schooling extends up to the 12th grade or 18 years of age in Portugal. Pre -school education is compulsory from the age of 5. Children and young people aged between 6 and 18 are considered to be of school age, also including students in need of special education. It should be noted that the guardian has the duty to enroll the minor in public, private and cooperative schools or in education and/or training institutions recognized by the competent authorities. The student, in turn, has an obligation to attend classes. Compulsory schooling ceases with obtaining a diploma for a course leading to a secondary level of education or, regardless of obtaining a diploma for any cycle or level of education, when the student turns 18.

When applying for a residence under the Golden Visa program, there is no criteria to be fulfilled regarding your children. As you and your children won’t be permanently in Portuguese territory, you will be able to continue to homeschool them using an online program.

As soon as you obtain the Golden Visa, your whole family can acquire legal residence in Portugal. This means that, by becoming residents in Portugal, they will be able to enroll in Portuguese schools. Attending Portuguese or American distance education will always be your choice.
