Can I have family reunification benefits on a carer visa if my cousin that lives in Australia is sick?

He doesn’t have family there and really needs special care as he is battling cancer and I want to be there for him. What is the best way to go about this? What documents would I need to prove this?

Do note the current processing time for a new carer application is expected to be 7 years. For this reason, if applying, I recommend making an onshore application which will allow you to remain in Australia during this process time. Generally, if applying for a carer visa onshore, and remaining in Australia on a bridging visa following a visitor visa to enter Australia, you would not be eligible for medicare coverage in Australia until the carer visa is granted (except for where some foreign citizens have reciprocal health care agreements with Australia, this includes Belgium, Finland, Italy, Malta, Netherlands, NZ, Norway, Ireland, Slovenia, Sweden and the UK). However in the case you've mentioned, you would not be eligible to apply for a carer visa. The carer was must be a relative of the sponsor and this covers close relatives and extends to a grandparent, grandchild, niece/nephew or  aunt/uncle. It does not include a cousin on the sponsor unfortunately.

What type of benefits are you looking for? If you satisfy the carer relationship, then yes, you will get PR to take care of him.

You can apply for subclass 116 Carer Visa, if your sponsor is assessed by Bupa Medical Visa Services as having a medical condition which is long term or permanent, need help with practical aspects of daily life for at least 2 years and unable to reasonably get the care they need in Australia, whether from another relative or an Australian welfare, hospital, or community nursing service.

That is the role for the medical treatment visa. However, depending on the circumstances, the tourist visa may simplify the process, then after that you could transfer on to the Medical Treatment Visa as a companion if your cousin then moves to a Medical Treatment Visa too.
