Can Iranian nationals apply for citizenship of Turkey?

We are Iranian nationals. Due to the recent changes in the treaty between Iran and the U.S., we are no longer qualified for the U.S. E-2 visa. Now we want to turn to the Turkish citizenship-by-investment program since Turkey is also a treaty country with the U.S. Are Iranian nationals banned from participating in the CBI program of Turkey? If not, how long does it take us to obtain citizenship?

In order to apply for an E-2 visa, you have to become a Turkish citizen first. Therefore, you need to start your Turkish citizenship application as soon as possible. As you may know, when you buy properties valued above $250,000, you may apply for Turkish citizenship to the Turkish Land Registry Office. After the office checks your appraisal report and bank transfer documents, it gives approval for citizenship (mostly in between 3 to 7 days). With this citizenship approval, you may apply to the Immigration Office for a contemporary residence permit. Furthermore, with both documents, you need to apply to the General Directorate of Population and Citizenship. And they usually review applications within 30 days.

Iranians ranked second after Iraqis in buying properties in Turkey and first in applying for Turkish citizenship by investment. Iranian nationals are eligible for participating in the Turkish CBI program. It takes about 4 months to obtain Turkish citizenship.

The U.S. decision to impose sanctions on Iran is not a restraint for Iranian citizens from gaining Turkish citizenship through investment. Like the other country's citizens, Iranian citizens can get Turkish citizenship without any restrictions. As a matter of fact, in 2019, according to the statistics, Iranian citizens are the citizens who get the most Turkish citizenship. Iranian citizens can try to overcome the sanction imposed on their country by using Turkish citizenship they gained. In this way, they use Turkish citizenship as a step to obtain US citizenship or acquire a US visa. In the case of all your documents are complete and your application is evaluated positively, you can obtain Turkish citizenship within 2 to 4 months. This period will be shorter if you follow your application by the help of an experienced lawyer.

Iranian nationals can apply for citizenship in Turkey. There is no ban for the program. Turkey has also been a treaty country for the U.S. E-2 visa program since 1990. Turkish nationals are eligible to benefit from this program if the other criteria designated by the US are met. As for your question on the timeline, after the investor finds the suitable property, an evaluation report must be obtained from an independent company. Depending on the company the investor is working with, the report can be prepared within a single day. If all these conditions are met, the purchase can also be completed within a single day at the Title Deed Registry. Once the investor obtains the deed, there really is no waiting period to apply for Citizenship. After the application is made, it takes less than a month for the investor to get a residence permit, and the citizenship application review can take as short as three to four months, but since it is dependent on multiple government agencies’ workload, this duration can differ on a case-by-case basis. Once the program is completed successfully, the investor becomes a Turkish citizen and will obtain a Turkish passport. The passport issuing process takes one to two weeks.

There is no ban to obtain Turkish citizenship via the CBI program for Iranian citizens. You can also benefit from the E-2 visa after you obtain the citizenship of Turkey. But keep in mind that you will also have to be interviewed by a U.S. consular post, there is no guarantee that you will be granted an E-2 visa even after you get Turkish citizenship. For the application duration of the CBI program, the whole procedure can take a maximum of five to six months after you purchase the property. But this can vary for different applications. According to my experience, applications are finalized in three months If everything is fine with the documents.
