In applying this requirement to your personal circumstances, the following clarifications are relevant: Country of Origin (Nationality) For Portuguese immigration purposes, the expression “country of origin” refers to the applicant’s country of nationality. For which nationality do I file my certificate of good conduct?
I plan to retire to Portugal in 2026, and meet all requirements for a D7 visa. I was born in the UK, and lived there as a citizen until 1981, when I moved to South Africa, and lived there as a permanent resident (non-citizen) until 2001, when I moved to the USA. Since then, I have lived in the USA and became a US citizen, though I have retained my UK passport. From which country/countries will I need a certificate of no criminal record?

For the purposes of the D7 visa for Portugal, the criminal record certificate to be submitted should be from your country of origin or from the country where you have been residing for more than one year. The certificate must be properly apostilled under the Hague Convention (when applicable) or legalized. In your case, although you hold UK nationality and previously lived for an extended period in South Africa, you have currently been residing in the United States for more than one year. Therefore, you will only need to provide a criminal record certificate from the United States, properly apostilled or legalized.
