How can I apply for U.K. permanent residency if I hold a tier 2 general work visa?

My employer sponsored me for a work visa last year. My ultimate goal is to obtain U.K. permanent residency or citizenship. Given my current visa type and status, when and how can I apply? Which category of visa should I apply for? Do I still need to rely on my employer to file a permanent residency application?

You have to be on a tier 2 visa for five years and earn the required amount of salary to qualify for ILR. There are other requirements as well. Please check it before you apply. Otherwise, you may switch over to another category or continuous resident.
