How can I get citizenship by descent in Italy?

I'm an American of Italian origin but never got Italian citizenship. How can I go about getting an Italian passport?

If you have an Italian ancestor, you might be entitled to apply for Italian citizenship by descent, which could eventually lead you to have an Italian passport. A thorough assessment of eligibility criteria and documentation shall be carried out to verify your eligibility and the applicable process.

You need to confirm if you are eligible. If confirmed, prepare all supporting certificates, apply at the Italian Consulate which has jurisdiction over your residency, or file a Court action (if you have female lineage only).
