How can company employees stay and work in Italy for more than 3 months?

I own an American company that needs to send two American technicians to Italy to install equipment that is being sold. The installation could take up to 4 months. What visa would be the best option for them? Are there any pathways for special cases, like companies?

If you do not have a subsidiary/branch in Italy that can apply for intra-company permits, the only option would be as assignment pursuant to the service agreement that you have executed with the Italian customer (under art. 27(i) Immigration Law). The application for obtaining the work permit must be filed by the Italian company but the workers remain hired by the foreign company. These permits are for a maximum duration of 4 years (2 + 2 years). A posted worker notification under EU Directive 67/2014 is required in this case.

To perform a work activity for more than 90 days in Italy a work visa and permit shall be obtained prior to arrival. One option could be the service agreement work visa and residence permit ex art. 27 lett. i) of L.D. 286/98, which allows the performance of working activities in the context of an international service agreement.
