Children born in Portugal to foreign parents who are not working for their own state and who did not refuse Portuguese citizenship can also have the right to Portuguese citizenship in its original form if one of the parents is a legal resident in Portugal or if, regardless of the title, the parent has been living in the country for at least a year.

On Nov. 10, the Portuguese parliament approved changes to the Portuguese citizenship law. The new changes allow the children of foreign nationals born in Portugal to get Portuguese nationality, provided they (the parents) have resided in Portugal for at least one year prior to the birth date. As for the criteria that must be fulfilled in order to achieve this goal, the government still has to issue the regulatory law in this regard.
