At what point is age determined when obtaining Maltese citizenship?

Our oldest daughter just turned 17 and we are considering applying for the Maltese citizenship program. We know the cost for a child under the age of 18 is 25,000 euros and the cost for a child who is 18 is 50,000 euros. If we apply when she is 17 and are approved after she turns 18, how much will we have to pay? If she needs to be approved when she is still 17, how long does the application process take?

Most probably her age will be calculated on the date when the approval in principal and request for payment of the main contribution are issued. If she just turned 17, you have all chances to pay 25,000 euro only if you start the process ASAP. From the moment you submit a pack of the documents for citizenship, Identity Malta has 120 days to consider it and issue the approval in principal. If Identity Malta has a question and you need to answer it, this 120-day period will be on hold until the receipt of your answer. Normally the process from submission of the pack for citizenship until obtaining the approval in principal/request for payment of the main contribution takes about five to six months. If the applicant turns 18 prior to the approval, he has to pay the full adult dependent fee.
