He will just need to show all the legal documentation - court order, for instance, naming you as his current guardian, and the adoption paperwork.

It is perfectly possible to have your adopted child to apply as your dependent for a residence permit in Portugal, under family regrouping rules. To this end, all that is required is for you to provide the Portuguese authorities the child’s adoption papers, without any need for any other formality.

Your application may include your step son, because the following are considered family members of the "golden visa" holder: Minors adopted by the applicant or by the spouse under the terms of art.99, no.1, paragraph c) of DL no. 23/2007, of July 4th. In order to demonstrate the family link, the adoption document must be certified by the Portuguese embassy.
