How can I re-enter Japan after being deported 26 years ago?

I overstayed in Japan on a visa in 1993–1998. I was then in court and deported from Japan by immigration. Can I get a tourist visa to visit Japan now?

The period of denial of landing solely for the reason of overstaying is up to 10 years after your last departure from Japan. You will not be denied a visa for that reason alone. It is a good idea to apply for a tourist visa at a Japanese consulate that has jurisdiction over your place of residence. Other things will also be examined, so a visa will not necessarily be issued. If there are other violations of the Immigration Control Act or the Criminal Code, there is a high possibility that a visa will not be issued.
