How can the digital nomad visa lead to permanent residency in Malta?

Would my years of stay on the Nomad Residence Permit in Malta count towards permanent residency if I end up living in the country for a long time?

The Malta Nomad Residence Permit (MNRP) allows third-country nationals to reside in Malta for a period of up to one year. The Malta Nomad Residence Permit may be renewed, provided the conditions required to apply are still being met. A holder of the MNRP may stay in Malta on this basis for a maximum period of three years. Therefore, it does not lead to a long-term residency status, as third-country nationals are required to have been legally and continuously residing in Malta for five years.

Holder of a nomad visa is not automatically entitled to permanent residency in Malta. The Nomad Residence Permit holder may stay in Malta on the basis of a nomad visa for a maximum period of three years. In order to be eligible to apply for a long-term residence permit (the term "permanent residency" is only applicable to EU and EEA nationals), an individual should spend at least five years legally residing in Malta.
