How is time of residency in Portugal determined?

What proof would I have to submit to show I lived in Portugal most of the year to qualify for a permanent residency?

Normally, the SEF is able to understand this situation ex officio, by verifying the payment of taxes and Social Security contributions (when applicable) over the years. Even so, if they are unable to determine this, then they may ask you to demonstrate that you have resided here, through a proof of address (e.g.: utility bills in your name showing consistent payments and usage in Portugal, bank statements from a Portuguese bank showing regular transactions). Entry and exit stamps in your passport can be also required.

To become the owner of a permanent residence card in Portugal, you first need to obtain a temporary residence permit. After five years of maintaining the status, you can apply for permanent residence. The time of residence counts from the issuing of your first temporary residence permit. Residence permits in Portugal are obtained by study, employment or marriage with a citizen of Portugal, for family reunification.
