The total timeframe for the permanent residency approval under self-solvency visa is three years, during which the applicant must visit the country in four opportunities: first to file the application, second to renew the ID that is valid for two years, then to renew the temporary ID, and finally for the approval and obtaining of the final residency ID. Even though physical residency isn't required, an absence for more than two consecutive years can lead to residency suspension. This is the reason why it is recommended to visit the country every two years after securing permanent residency.

Please note that you have to be in Panama at least two weeks when you apply for the visa, then you have to come back when the visa is approved. In order for you not to lose Panamanian residency, you must visit Panama at least one day every two years. The application cannot be done from abroad.

The self-solvency residency program requires a minimum investment either in real estate, a fixed-term deposit account or a mix of these two. You’ll first obtain a two-year resident permit to later request permanency. In any case, you won’t be asked to abandon your country. A visit every two years will suffice to maintain your valid residency status. All residency applications must be done presently. No procedures can be done from abroad.
