How can American investors put their money in a Portuguese fund to qualify for the golden visa?

Where can I find a list of accredited entities to choose from for this kind of investment? Can this process be all done online?

There is no official list of funds certified by the Immigration Office. The investor shall select a fund that is compliant with the law, and for this, a legal advisor can do the due diligence. Being an American investor, it is important to make sure that the fund complies with FATCA regulations.

In order to invest in funds deemed eligible for a Golden Visa application, the investor has to open a bank account in Portugal, perform the needed funds transfer and, once complete, apply the funds on a fund of his choice. As there are several funds with different portfolio oriented goals, we would always advise for this investment to be duly accompanied by a professional when subscribing for one of them. The ARI / Golden Visa application is divided into two stages: an online first stage, where all basic documents are uploaded to SEF’s platform and, once approved, a second stage, where the main applicant (and family members, should this apply) personally go to SEF facilities and have their biometric data collected, also delivering all necessary documents. This is the only part of the procedure where you’ll be required to travel to Portugal in order to have your biometric data collected.

U.S. citizens can invest in Portuguese Funds, qualifying for the Golden Visa. Be aware that not all banks open accounts for U.S. citizens for the purpose of investing in Funds, because of FACTA. As for funds, there are countless funds in Portugal that are eligible for the Golden Visa, some of them are more ecological, others are more financial and others have a more real estate oriented portfolio. Pay attention to the offer, which is plenty, but not always safe. The Golden Visa application process, from the first step, can be done remotely. You only have to come to Portugal once, for the biometric collection at the SEF.
